I learnt a lot this year.
In May of 2022 I launched Preamble on Instagram. Preamble was accidental because my initial goal was to showcase website rebuilds. Something I’ve done for more than 10 years now. Essentially, where I find websites I liked and I would rebuild them from scratch. But that night in May, I got out of my bed and I analysed the GDP per capita of South Africa for the past 60 years and posted the visualised analysis on Instagram.
23,000 followers and a growing list of subscribers later, Preamble’s data has inspired magazine covers, news reporting, and received earned media on podcasts and a magazine feature. My intention was to share interesting data and simplify the visualisation so that anyone could understand any topic.
Thanks for the support!
This year I’ve been inspired by a lot of people. The followers, subscribers, and supporters. Sashin Pillay and Karl Nchite at Unicorn Chats who led our newsletter collaboration on Amazon as they prepare to enter a new market. Caleb Maru who runs a VC fund for African startups. The team at Africa The Big Deal and Max Cuvellier and Maxime Bayen who proved data is essential. Zimasa Vabaza at #SHSI on TikTok. Arinze Obiezue who started Kenga for Afro Gen Z. Finally, Oore Ladipo who when I was in doubt, encouraged me to launch Preamble. Thank you.
What is Preamble?
I named Preamble, Preamble after the preamble of the constitution of South Africa. There is a phrase I consider important and ambitious in the document and it says: free the potential of each person. People have asked me this question throughout this year, “What is Preamble?” I’d like to thank everyone who has helped in getting us closer to the answer.
Thank you, happy holidays and see you in 2023!
